For as long as anyone can remember Men, Dwarves, Elves, Orcs, Goblins, and all the nearkin races have coexisted on Gol Gilliath. Peace between the races is cautious and seldom long-lasting. You see, the inhabitants of this world desperately seek to surround themselves with the familiar - for this world is ever-changing. 
 

Ancient Obelisk structures tower over the land, glowing with mysterious technology. Some believe they came from the stars, or perhaps even the heavenly realm of the gods themselves. So much is still unknown about these giant towers, but they have provided us with riches beyond our dreams and immortality. Your body can die here, but the Obelisks revive you into a fresh body - your wounds healed and safely back in your bed as if it were all a bad dream.

For many this endless loop of immortality is indeed a nightmare from which they cannot wake.

We can only speculate as to how or why we have been gifted ever lasting life. Perhaps it has something to do with the other known fact about the Obelisks: they serve as inter-dimensional breaches to foreign lands. The portals are only ever open for a short while before they breach the next realm. All of us surviving here today descended from travelers from these other worlds. Those that do not make it back through the portal are trapped on the other side forever.

 

The breach has been a source of much controversy. There is always buzz for the next breach, both excitement and fear. Adventurers, thrill seekers,  and merchants flock through the portal hoping to bring back riches and foreign goods. Many never return. Others avoid the breach and fortify their defenses, preparing for the worst. They are right to fear the breach, for while we seek to conquer the breachers - the breachers seek to conquer us.
